Evolving Fractal Gene Regulatory Networks for Robot Control

چکیده

Fractal proteins are a new evolvable method of mapping genotype to phenotype through a developmental process, where genes are expressed into proteins comprised of subsets of the Mandelbrot Set. The resulting network of gene and protein interactions can be designed by evolution to produce specific patterns, that in turn can be used to solve problems. Here the use of fractal gene regulatory networks for learning a robot path through a series of obstacles is described. The results indicate the ability of this system to learn regularities in solutions and automatically create and use modules.

Evolving Reactive Controller for a Modular Robot: Benefits of the Property of State-Switching in Fractal Gene Regulatory Networks

In this paper, we study Fractal Gene Regulatory Networks (FGRNs) evolved as local controllers for a modular robot in snake topology that reacts adaptively to environment. The task is to have the robot moving in a specific direction until it reaches a randomly placed targetzone and stays there. We point to a characteristic of FGRN model, namely “state-switching property” and demonstrate it as a ...

Evolving beyond perfection: an investigation of the effects of long-term evolution on fractal gene regulatory networks.

This paper continues a theme of exploring algorithms based on principles of biological development for tasks such as pattern generation, machine learning and robot control. Previous work has investigated the use of genes expressed as fractal proteins to enable greater evolvability of gene regulatory networks (GRNs). Here, the evolution of such GRNs is investigated further to determine whether e...

Fractal Gene Regulatory Networks for Robust Locomotion Control of Modular Robots

Designing controllers for modular robots is difficult due to the distributed and dynamic nature of the robots. In this paper fractal gene regulatory networks are evolved to control modular robots in a distributed way. Experiments with different morphologies of modular robot are performed and the results show good performance compared to previous results achieved using learning methods. Furtherm...

Evolving Fractal Proteins

The fractal protein is a new concept for improving evolvability, scalability, exploitability and providing a rich medium for evolution. Here the idea of fractal proteins is introduced, and a series of experiments showing how evolution can design and exploit them within gene regulatory networks is described.
